Recycled DVD mandalas
From discarded discs to art worth keeping
Sejal hand-cuts unwanted DVDs into petals and leaves, then layers them into framed mandalas. There is no paint: the colour comes from the discs themselves, shifting as the light moves through the day.

Each disc becomes dozens of hand-cut shapes. Together they turn something made to be thrown away into something made to be kept.
How each piece is made
1
Cutting by hand
Unwanted DVDs are cut by hand into dozens of petal, leaf and circle shapes.
2
Laying out the pattern
The pieces are arranged from the centre outward, with the shimmer of each disc chosen to sit beside the next.
3
Building ring by ring
Ring after ring is added until the mandala is complete, with hundreds of pieces in a single work.
4
Framed and finished
The finished mandala is mounted and framed under glass, ready to hang.
The sustainability story
Why recycled DVDs?
Waste, given a new life
Old DVDs usually can’t go in household recycling, so most are thrown away. Every piece keeps a stack of them out of the bin.
Colour without paint
The shimmer is the disc’s own surface, so no paint is added. Blues, purples, greens and golds appear and change as you move around it.
Made to be kept
Each mandala is framed and one of a kind, designed to hang for years rather than be replaced. A quiet, visible example of the circular economy.
